Story by Ken Panton

The list of city hotels that offer an array of luxurious comforts, spacious rooms, and enviable locations is essential for multi-need travelers. The promise of proximity to business addresses often means that the offerings of a vibrant downtown area are nearly out of reach. In the past few years we have discovered exciting city hotels between Mexico City, Washington DC, Boston and others that can boast location, location, location as a true amenity. With enthusiasm we are adding the only hotel with its front entrance directly situated on Chicago’s world-famous Magnificent Mile: the InterContinental Chicago.

With both shopping and dining just outside the door, the InterContinental is fabulously located just moments from the trolley, Navy Pier, Millennium Park, and convenient to McCormick Place, Merchandise Mart, and the Loop business district. The airports are also near. Midway airport is just 12 miles away and O’Hare just a few miles further.

Long considered one of the city’s landmark architectural treasures, the InterContinental Chicago’s two guestroom towers are contemporary and classically designed. Adorned with cast bronze ornamentation and a sweeping grand staircase, the four-story lobby recalls an era of true jet-set style. The hotel has 790 newly appointed guestrooms and suites all offering magnificent city or lake views. The 71 spacious suites are complete with additional living space and upgraded amenities, and there are 23 business-class suites that accommodate the demands of business travelers.  The Presidential Suite, located on the 35th floor of the Historic Tower, overlooks both the Magnificent Mile and Lake Michigan. Handsomely appointed, the two-level Presidential Suite features floor to ceiling windows, four full baths, and a beautiful staircase to the master bedroom.

At the InterContinental Chicago, the esteemed chefs and sommeliers are all members of the exclusive who’s who landscape of this culinary capital. Start your experience at ENO where their master sommelier will prepare flights of wine, chocolate, and cheese from around the world. Continue to dinner at the fabulous Zest Restaurant where the sleek minimalist décor frames the view directly over Michigan Avenue. The modern melding of internationally inspired American cuisine prepared by Chef Mittelberger is both intriguing and delectable.  End your night at The Bar, the hotel’s 1920 club-style bar, where the award-winning martinis are all the rage!

Frequently referenced in architectural tours of the city, the original 1920s design of this world-class Chicago Magnificent Mile hotel has been faithfully preserved through a series of renovations, representing nearly a quarter-billion dollars of thoughtful investments. The resulting care and detail make this ideally placed hotel a must-visit destination for visitors to exciting Chicago.
