Every six months or so, it happens to me…a strong desire to take a hiatus from the frenetic pace of the city and escape for a week of peace, pampering and pleasurable experiences overtakes me and I’m off. I’ve traveled around the world and numerous health spas in search of serenity, but nothing compares to the heavenly sanctuary I discovered at Meadowood in Napa Valley, California.

Nestled among oak and pine trees in the heart of wine country, Meadowood is the perfect retreat to rejuvenate both the mind and body. Reminiscent of the majestic estates of the south, this private 250-acre resort has 85 exclusive cottages, lodges and suites that are so secluded, I felt as if I were the sole guest at Meadowood.

And, that’s exactly how I was made to feel...

After checking in, I was personally escorted to my charming country cottage. Overlooking the lush fairway of the golf course, it proved to be a true home away from home. Complete with luxurious amenities, it had its own private terrace, comfortable bedroom, expansive bath and separate sitting room with a ready-to-use wood-burning fire place.

Next, it was off to the spa to begin the highly anticipated pampering process. Unique to Meadowood is a selection of Ayurvedic treatments that date back 5000 years in Eastern Indian healing techniques. The Mandala incorporates both the Abhayanga and Shirodhara treatments combined to include two therapists simultaneously massaging your entire body with a warm cascade of specially blended, herb infused oils. Afterwards, herbal oil is dripped in a steady stream onto the forehead, creating a centralized "third eye" to quiet the mind and soothe the senses. Towards the conclusion of the treatment, a mixture of therapeutic oils and herbs are massaged into the hair to nourish and condition the scalp as well as give your hair an overall healthy, glistening appearance.

Other notable treatments exclusive to the area include a Chardonnay Rosehip Mud Wrap which exfoliates the skin, draws out impurities and is followed by soothing full body application of grapeseed oil for silky soft feel. During the remainder of my stay, I indulged in the nurturing and relaxing Anti-Oxidant and Anti-Aging Facial as well as the enjoyable Bliss therapy for perfect looking hands and feet. Lastly, for a beautiful sun bronzed look without the damaging rays of the sun, there’s Flawless Body Bronzing -- an all-natural process that works with the melanin in your skin for a healthy looking glow.

For exercise enthusiasts, Meadowood offers a wide selection of fitness classes as well as a complete gym facility indoors. Outside amidst a background of lush mountains and trees, challenge yourself on the hiking trails and bike paths or enjoy a game of tennis, golf or croquet – all of which private lessons are available.

While at Meadowood, be sure to dine at The Restaurant where Chef Steven Tevere serves up delectable continental cuisine in an elegant atmosphere overlooking the croquet lawn. I highly recommend the M&M Terrine of Sonoma Moulard and Muscovy foie gras and the Rack of Lamb served with herbed potatoes and eggplant puree. For a more casual atmosphere, there’s the Grill or if you prefer to dine in your bathrobe beside your cottage’s fireplace or on its private balcony, indulge in the superb room service at Meadowood. Try the outrageous Caesar salad with poached salmon... the roasted garlic slices and fresh anchovies make it a truly delightful experience.
