Couples seeking the ultimate romantic getaway, one that will take them far away from a seemingly endless winter, will find that the The Ritz-Carlton, Cancun is the best place in which to delve into some sumptuous, Caribbean romance. Infused with the soothing, yet opulent design elements of a magnificent Spanish villa, the resort has all the luxury one expects from the Ritz and more. Now celebrating its ten-year anniversary, the Ritz-Carlton, Cancun is the first and only resort to win triple honors from the prestigious American Automobile Association (AAA).

Sweeping over seven and half acres of prime, ocean front property, the resort has 365 guestrooms and suites; each of which has muted salmon-colored walls, soft carpeting and white billowy curtains that are brought to life by a perpetual breeze and the vibrant hues of the breathtaking ocean. The grandest accommodations can be had at the Club Level, which can only be accessed by a private elevator key. Breakfast, afternoon snacks and cocktails are complementary and a private butler is on hand to unpack and pack your belongings. First-class bath amenities are provided by Hermès.

Couples can kick-start their escape by requesting a“Margarita” bath upon arrival, where they can soak away the stress of their long, tiring trip. The unusual bath is mixed by a bath butler, who first lines the tub with sea salts and then garnishes it with fresh limes, margarita flowers and lime-scented bath gel. Votive candles floating in margarita glasses are placed at the tub’s edge, while a pitcher of the refreshing concoction await with two salt-rimmed glasses. Salud!

After the sun had set over the bay, my unsuspecting beau and I padded out to the beach in fluffy white bathrobes for our“synchronized“ treatment at the unforgettable Mayan Sanctuary. There a regal Tikki hut, or “Palapa” standing a few feet from the crashing waves and wrapped in transparent gauze, greeted us. Small white lights lined the wooden walkway and large torches burned just outside the massage sanctuary. Inside, two white beds stood side by side, as aromatherapy candles flickered and soft music played. Relaxing beyond my wildest dreams, the masseuse used fragrant lavender and eucalyptus oils as the rhythmic sounds of the ocean drowned out every care in the world.

To say the food and at the Ritz-Carlton, Cancun is “good“ is an understatement. We dined at the Five Diamond Award-winning Club Grill where Chef Rodrigo Torres bestowed his magical Mexican flavors on a most remarkable meal. Reminiscent of a jazz lounge, with the sounds to match, The Club Grill is a warm, intimate room, where tabletops are sprinkled with rose petals and silver tea-lamps with tassels shed soft light. The Club Grill service was impeccable and the cuisine worthy of high praises. For dessert our Chocolate and Grand Marnier soufflé were, well, to-die-for. If it’s private dinning your heart desires, the Ritz-Carlton, Cancun promises to set up a dinner table in any area of the resort — even on the beach.

Nightly turndown is a complimentary service but as a special “extra”, couples can request the Rose Petal Turndown, featuring fresh rose petals scattered atop Frette bed linens. A romantic CD plays as champagne and chocolate —covered strawberries are served on a silver tray.

The resort has two large swimming pools and a plethora of beach and poolside amenities. It pays to check in with the pool concierge because he’s loaded with goodies; from magazines and fresh fruit to spritzer-bottles and chilled, scented towels.

For an unforgettable, first-class romantic getaway, there’s no better place than the Ritz-Carlton, Cancun. Buen Viaje!
