“Family is king.” That saying could not be truer than at the five-star Santa Caterina Hotel in Amalfi, Italy. Founded in 1880, four generations of loving care from the Gambardella family have gone into shaping this into one of Italy’s finest establishments. The Santa Caterina is an aristocrat among hotels that interprets its mission with passion and tireless hospitality.

Located on the famous Amalfi drive, just minutes away from the center of town, the Santa Caterina is nestled in the middle of a sprawling estate, high above the Mediterranean Sea, amongst lemon and orange groves, lush greenery, terraced gardens, and bursting bougainvilleas. The spectacular and mesmerizing views of the coast will surely make you forget wherever it was you came from.

All of the rooms are exquisitely unique and boast balcony, terrace or garden views of the enchanting Amalfi coast. There are 40 rooms and 12 suites in the main building and 12 more suites tucked away in the plush privacy of the Santa Caterina estate. Each deluxe room features original antiques, many which are family possessions from the early twentieth century, and fantastic hand-painted Vietri tiles. Flat screen TV’s, high-speed internet access, heated towel bars, and sea view bathrooms are just some of the ways the Santa Caterina manages to thrill their guests. Just married? Then be sure to check out the Giulietta e Romeo suite, a small two-story chalet perched on the sea where you can enjoy a Jacuzzi bath while taking in the fragrant wafts from the surrounding citrus groves, hearing nothing but the waves gently crashing beneath.

After a day of sunbathing and swimming in the seawater pool, you can satisfy your appetite at the delicious beach club restaurant, Al Mare, that includes regional wood-fired oven pizzas, grilled local fish, hand-made pasta, and a family favorite: buffalo mozzarella grilled in the hotel’s own lemon leaves. The main restaurant, Santa Caterina, has won international acclaim for its traditional recipes such as Tagliolini al Limone, Gamberi in Pastella su Crema di Ruchetta and Profiteroles alla Crema Profumata di Limone. The view over Amalfi by candlelight dinner is surpassed only by the impeccable service of the staff, most of who have been working for the family for more than 20 years. The cellar boasts a seriously discriminating choice of international wines and select vintages from the Campania region, many of which are never exported beyond the region. Two elevators cut into the rock cliff take guests from the hotel and Santa Caterina restaurant on the upper level straight down to the Al Mare restaurant and private beach. And of course, those who prefer to dine in the privacy of their own terraces may order from room service 24 hours a day.

If you are crazy enough to ever want to leave this hotel, you will find that the Santa Caterina is centrally located for touring Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum, Ravello, Naples, Sorrento, Positano and Capri. The hotel can arrange for any excursion your imagination can dream up.

The owners lavish constant attention on refurbishing the hotel so that it becomes more exquisite every year while preserving its original atmosphere perfectly intact. The most recent improvements include a boutique and a full gym with sumptuous spa massages that would make the Equinox fitness clubs green with envy. The Santa Caterina became a five-star hotel in 1985 and is now one of The Leading Small Hotels of the World. It has won the prestigious Five Star Diamond Award every year since 1998. Pools of light, water, and silence keep the spirit of the Santa Caterina a favorite destination for heads of state, jet set fashionistas, and educated travelers worldwide. This timeless, magical, heaven-on-earth simply cannot be missed!
